This was last term’s project: restoring a near-scrap Toyota Spacio and preparing it for resale—right here on our campus.
Two years ago, we introduced these internships for our Year 2 mechanics students. Alongside their normal workshop practice, this initiative gives them something extra: the chance to take on full projects that mirror the challenges of industry.
Our students didn’t just learn technical repairs. They learnt how to assess a vehicle, source and cost parts, budget carefully, and manage a project from start to finish. Just as importantly, they picked up the professional habits that every employer values—turning up on time, keeping to the task, and yes… leaving phones well out of the workshop. 📵
And in case you’re wondering—the bodywork was outsourced. Even good mechanics know when to call in the specialists.
It’s training that prepares them not only for employment, but also for creating value on their own—whether running a business or doing a bit of work on the side.
The restoration turned out so well that we’ve been seeing the car around Ndola and on our campus- clearly, the owner decided to keep it! A true vote of confidence in the skills, discipline, and teamwork our students showed.
