What stands out about Auntie Mary isn’t just what she does, but how she makes students feel. To them, Mary is more than the one who cooks their meals—she’s Auntie Mary. That title says it all: she’s seen as family.
Yes, she keeps the kitchen spotless and the meals on time, but her care goes further. From warming up water for a student who isn’t feeling well to mixing an aloe vera remedy—or some natural concoction she believes will help—Auntie Mary brings kindness with every act. And whether it works or not doesn’t matter; students feel better simply because it came from her, given with care and a smile.
For two years, MfA is home. Life outside our gates can be tough; inside, we want students to encounter something different—genuine care and people who notice them. Auntie Mary provides that quietly, day after day.
